Tue, Jul 22, 2014, 09:36 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) media spokesman Gayantha Karunathilaka said that the party had appointed the nomination board and the operational committee for the Uva Provincial Council election.

The nomination board comprises Karu Jayasuriya, Kabir Hashim, Tissa Attanayake, Daya Gamage, Sajith Premadasa, Ravi Karunanayaka, Lakshman Kiriella, Mangala Samaraweera, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Harin Fernando, Wijedasa Rajapaksa, Ruwan Wijewardena and Daya Pelpola.

A national operation committee has also been appointed to handle the UNP election campaign.

The national operation committee comprises Karu Jayasuriya, Kabir Hashim, Tissa Attanayake, Daya Gamage, Sajith Premadasa, Ravi Karunanayaka, Lakshman Kiriella, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, Thalatha Atukorale and K. Velayutham.

Out of the 13 appointed to the nomination board, 10 are loyalists of the UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe, political observers point out.

Several former Uva Provincial Councilors and electoral organizers, who are loyal to the Hambantota District MP Sajith Premadasa and opposed the leadership of Ranil Wickremasinghe, have reportedly expressed fear that they might not get the nominations from the party to contest for the Uva PC elections as the nomination board is filled with Wickremasinghe loyalists.
