* Sri Lanka main opposition hands over petition to Supreme Court against redistribution of seats in Uva Provincial Council
Tue, Jul 22, 2014, 03:50 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 21, Colombo: Main opposition United National Party (UNP) Badulla district parliamentarian Harin Fernando who is slated to hand over nominations to contest to the Uva Provincial Council election filed a petition Monday in Supreme Court against the Election Commissioner.

The MP cited in his petition that the change of the distribution of seats of Uva Provincial Council violated his human rights.

Speaking to media after handing over the petition, MP Fernando said that the allocation of seats in the Provincial Council caused injustice to Badulla district. He argued that the number of voters is more important than the area when distributing seats in the Provincial Councils.

Attorney Nalin Amarajeewa who appears for the petitioner said that an injunction against the election procedure would also be sought.

Meanwhile, MP Fernando is expected to resign from his membership in parliament on August 05 to contest the election as UNP Chief Minister candidate for Uva Provincial Council.

The Department of Election has decided to reduce three seats of Badulla district of Uva Province and add them to Moneragala district. Accordingly, the number of seats in Badulla district reduces to 18 while Moneragala district will have 14 seats.

Addressing a media briefing Thursday, the Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said the number of seats for the Badulla and Moneragala Districts were allocated based on the population and geographical features.
