Tue, Jul 22, 2014, 03:42 am SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana says that the Kurunegala district MP Nimal Nilwala Wijesinghe who is wanted for assaulting a Village Officer (Grama Niladhari) is absconding.

The Police had conducted a search in his residence but the suspect has already fled the area, the police media spokesman said.

The MP is charged with assaulting Ananda Wimalasiri, the Grama Niladhari in-charge-of the Kurunegala-Ambakote 617 division. The official was assaulted on Saturday (July 19) after he had reportedly attempted to prevent a group of MP's supporters illegally felling trees within the Ambakote Grama Niladhari Division. Wimalasiri, who was brutally assaulted by the MP and admitted to the Kurunegala Hospital is still receiving treatment.

The fellow Village Officers of the Divisional Secretariat of the victimized Village Officer held a demonstration today.

Sri Lanka Village Officers' Association held a press conference today to protest the MP's assault and demanded the police to arrest the ruling party MP and conduct an impartial investigation.
