July 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka police media spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana says that the Kurunegala district MP Nimal Nilwala Wijesinghe who is wanted for assaulting a Village Officer (Grama Niladhari) is absconding.

The Police had conducted a search in his residence but the suspect has already fled the area, the police media spokesman said.

The MP is charged with assaulting Ananda Wimalasiri, the Grama Niladhari in-charge-of the Kurunegala-Ambakote 617 division. The official was assaulted on Saturday (July 19) after he had reportedly attempted to prevent a group of MP's supporters illegally felling trees within the Ambakote Grama Niladhari Division.
