July 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) Badulla district MP Harin Fernando will resign from the parliament next week, UNP sources say.

The MP will resign to contest to the Uva Provincial Council election as the party's Chief Minister candidate.

He will deliver a special statement in parliament before his resignation, a UNP spokesman said.

UNP leadership council has given approval for MP Fernando's decision to quit parliament to contest for the Uva Provincial Council election.

Nomination for the Uva Provincial Council election will be called from the 30th July to 6th August.

Incumbent Chief Minister Sashendra Rajapaksa will contest as the Chief Minister candidate of the ruling party United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
