* Sri Lanka lawmaker accused of assaulting a public official

July 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka police have initiated an investigation against a Member of Parliament over assaulting a public official.

Kurunegala district MP Nimal Wijesinghe is accused of assaulting a Village Officer, a lower level administrative officer.

The Village Officer says the MP assaulted him over an incident related to cutting a tree belonged to a Samurdhi (Poverty Alleviation) officer loyal to the MP. The MP has denied the allegation.

The assaulted Village Officer has been hospitalized and the police investigation is continuing.
