* Sri Lanka main opposition has no trust in elections

July 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the government had deformed the entire election system by manipulating the executive powers.

UNP parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne says the government was compiling false electoral lists to fraudulently win the elections.

Addressing a press briefing held in Colombo, MP Wickramaratne pointed out that the date for the Presidential Election is decided not by the Election Commissioner but by the incumbent President himself.

The UNP MP further said that the people had no trust about free and fair elections. He expressed doubt on the entire election system and said that the Election Commissioner and the Election Department also could not be trusted.

The parliamentarian said that the addition of three seats from Badulla district to Moneragala district would pave way to elect one Provincial Councilor per each 32,000 voters of Moneragala district. However, with the change, the voters and representative ratio of Badulla district would be one for 45,000.

The government dissolved the Uva Provincial Council on Saturday midnight and the Election Commissioner is to announce a date for submitting nominations for elections to the Council.
