July 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka's election Commissioner will announce the date of calling for nominations for Uva Provincial Council election within a week, the Election Secretariat said.

Uva Provincial Council was dissolved midnight Saturday after Chief Minister Sashendra Rajapaksa sent a letter to Governor Nanda Mathew, requesting the Provincial Council to be dissolved.

The term of the Uva Provincial Council, which governs the Badulla and Moneragala Districts, is due to end on September 26 but the government has planned to dissolve the council before the term expires and hold the election in September.

Incumbent Chief Minister Sashendra Rajapaksa will contest as the Chief Minister candidate of the ruling coalition while Badulla district MP Harin Fernando is slated to contest for the post from opposition United National Party.
