* Fruit carnival held to promote fruit consumption among Sri Lankans

July 12, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the "Gram 200 Fruit Carnival of Sri Lanka" on July 14 at the Fruit Crops Research and Development Centre in Horana.

The Fruit Carnival will be held for one week until July 21 from 8.30 in the morning to 6 p.m.

Director of the Fruit Crops Research and Development Centre, Dr. M.M.S. Heenkenda said that the exhibition is targeted to promote fruit consumption among Sri Lankans, to educate them on fruit products and to enlighten the public about fruit cultivation.

He said the Sri Lankans are encouraged to eat at least 200 grams of fruit daily for a healthy life.

Sri Lanka is a country with a wide variety of tropical fruit species numbering over 200.

However, the country spends a large amount of money to import foreign fruit varieties like apple, oranges, grapes etc.
