Fri, Jul 11, 2014, 08:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 11, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa today reappointed the current Governor of the Northern Province Major General (Retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, whose official term is slated to end tomorrow.

Chandrasiri was sworn in as the Governor of Northern Province by the President at Temple Trees today.

Chandrasiri was initially appointed as the Governor of the war-torn Northern Province on 12th July 2009 for a five-year term.

Chandrasiri, an Army veteran, served in the Jaffna Peninsula on two occasions. He was the Divisional Commander, 52 Division, from 2002-2003 and later, from December 2005 to January 2009, functioned as the Security Forces Commander, Jaffna.

Reportedly Northern Province Chief Minister and the major Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance have strongly opposed the President's decision and stressed to appoint a civilian for the post.
