* New unit of Sri Lanka police to fight drug menace
Thu, Jul 10, 2014, 10:31 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police Headquarters will set up police intelligence units at police stations across the island to speed up the campaign to eliminate the drug menace, Police Media Spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana said.

The new units would function under a Police Inspector with direct supervision of the Police Superintendent.

The Intelligence Units will compile databases on all the drug smugglers and distributors arrested and charged during the last five years. They will also record lists of drug offenders and the persons convicted as well as those who are enlarged on bail, the Spokesperson said.

The units will also conduct operations against drug smuggling and narcotics criminals. These will be in addition to the other drug raids conducted by police stations, the Spokesman added.

Sri Lankan authorities have expressed concern that record hauls of illegal drugs seized by police and Customs recently pointed to a new smuggling operation using Colombo as a transshipment location.
