Sat, Jul 5, 2014, 11:31 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) commencing its preparations to defeat President Mahinda Rajapaksa's government will launch a people's force in the beginning of October, UNP and opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe said.

Addressing a meeting held in Kegalle today, Wickremasinghe said only the UNP can create a people's force and the party will launch a campaign aiming to obtain at least 500 votes from one polling center.

"If we launch the campaign based on a goal to get a minimum of 500 votes from one polling center then we can win any election," the party leader said.

He said that the party will appoint 12,000 polling center organizers and 30 planning committee members for the campaign ton increase the voter base.
