* Train derailment in Sri Lanka injures eight

July 05, Colombo: A passenger train derailed this evening in Sri Lankan capital Colombo injuring eight people, railway officials said.

An express train traveling from Matara to Colombo derailed as it was approaching the Bambalapitiya train station this evening, the Railway Main Control Room said.

The injured, including one female, have been admitted to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Three rail cars of the train had derailed from the train, damaging a section of the railway track near the Bambalapitiya station, the Railway Main Control Room said.

The accident delayed the train services on the coastal line as the services were limited to one track while repairs to the damaged track were being made. However, no cancellations of train services are expected.

The Sri Lanka Railways said it is investigating the derailment.
