Fri, Dec 26, 2014, 02:30 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 26, Colombo: Deputy Minister of Minor Export Crop Promotion Nishantha Mutuhettigama has left the country for Singapore defying a court order for his arrest.

A Sri Lankan court on Wednesday issued a warrant to arrest the deputy minister for obstruction of justice by attempting to remove three suspects arrested for an attack on a stage set up for an opposition election rally in Wanduramba Galle.

Local media reported that the deputy minister with two of his friends left the country early this morning from the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake.

Local newspaper Lankadeepa quoting a telephone call Mutuhettigama made from Singapore said the deputy minister has left the country fearing for his safety and he will return in two days.

Baddegama Magistrate Wednesday issued a warrant to arrest the Deputy Minister and his driver in connection with the arson attack on an election stage of common candidate Maithripala Sirisena in Wanduramba.

Three supporters of the Deputy Minister were arrested and remanded for the attack. The suspects were later released on bail.
