* Over 100 election monitors to arrive in Sri Lanka
Mon, Dec 15, 2014, 12:08 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Dec 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Election Department and the election monitoring organization People's Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) have decided to bring 104 international election monitors to observe the upcoming presidential polls.

Accordingly, 35 observers have been invited from PAFFREL, and the Department of Elections has invited 69 observers to monitor the Presidential Election to be held on January 08.

The international monitors will be from South Asian Election Monitoring Forum, South Asian Election Monitoring Association, Commonwealth Association and Asian Election Monitoring Network.

The monitors are also expected to be called from European Election Monitoring Association.

They are to arrive in Sri Lanka on the 27th of this month to engage in monitoring the campaign and voting, PAFFREL said.

Meanwhile, the Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has offered six election monitoring bodies the opportunity to place observers at 300 counting centers but he has not outlined how 300 counting centers out of the total of 1,200 counting centers will be determined.

However, the poll monitors have not accepted the Election Commissioner's offer, according to the election monitoring group Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) since the poll monitors want access to all counting centers.
