Dec 02, Colombo: A ruling party politician cross over to the opposition in support of the common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena was assaulted by a supporter of a senior minister, the election monitoring group Campaign for Free & Fair Elections reported.

United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Wennappuwa local councilor Shiron Fernando, who crossed-over to support common opposition candidate, has been assaulted by an individual on a motorbike Monday afternoon at his residence at Bolewatte.

The councilor has told CaFFE that he went to Polonnaruwa on 30 November to support the common candidate and that the next day a supporter of Senior Minister arrived at his house on a motor bike and assaulted him.
