* Competing party leaders of Sri Lanka main opposition to come together on same platform

Aug 30, Colombo: Leader of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremasinghe and his competitor Sajith Premadasa will address people after a long time from the same platform tomorrow.

The historic meeting organized by North Central Provincial Councilor Rohana Bandaranaike is to take place at Avukana in Anuradhapura district on Sunday.

Anuradhapura district UNP MP P. Harrison said that both leaders have confirmed the participation of the rally.

Massive attempt is underway to unite the two leaders of the UNP after their split in December 2011 when Premadasa backed an attempt to oust Wickremasinghe from the leader.

The battle cost Premadasa his deputy leadership and the membership in the Working Committee in the party.

Meanwhile, the party sources say Wickremasinghe, leadership council leader Karu Jayasuriya and Premadasa are to be seated on the same stage at the party's 68th anniversary rally which will be held in Passara in Uva Province on September 06.

Initially, Premadasa was to be named as UNP Deputy Leader at the event. However, the party is now considering to appoint him as the deputy leader after the Uva PC election to obtain support for the UNP's presidential election campaign.

The party is of the opinion that Premadasa's support is essential for the UNP to defeat incumbent President Mahinda Rajapaksa although some members are against appointing Premadasa as deputy leader.

Meanwhile, Premadasa, who is currently on a tour in the Wilpattu National Park, has agreed to join the Uva Provincial Council election campaigning activities, next week Sri Lanka Mirror reported.
