* MP of Sri Lanka main opposition threatens to cross over to government
Fri, Aug 29, 2014, 08:47 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 29, Colombo: A parliamentarian of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) has threatened to cross over to the government.

Sources close to the top leadership of the UNP said Colombo district MP Ravi Karunanayaka is likely to cross over the government if the party appoints Hambantota district MP Sajith Premadasa as the deputy leader.

Sources say that the MP Karunanayaka has recently told the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe that he will quit the party in case the party decides to nominate senior party member Premadasa as the Deputy Leader.

UNP sources say that there is an internal dialogue in the party regarding the plan to appoint Premadasa as the Deputy Leader due to his popularity and the decision is delayed due to internal conflicts as some party members have protested appointing Premadasa as the Deputy Leader.

However, sources close to the party leader say Wickremasinghe wants to set aside differences and rebuild the party by appointing Premadasa as the deputy leader and he may overlook Karunanayaka's threat since the Colombo district MP's popularity has waned in the recent years.
