* Sri Lanka Marxist party election offices in Uva Province destroyed allegedly by government supporters
Mon, Aug 25, 2014, 09:56 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 25, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna alleged today that supporters of the ruling party had destroyed 14 election offices of the party in the Uva Province and displayed the posters of the ruling party Chief Ministerial candidate Sashendra Rajapaksa.

A communiqué issued by the JVP said during the past 48 hours a band of thugs of the ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has set fire to 14 legally put up election offices of the JVP candidates for the Uva PC election and pasted posters of the UPFA candidate Sashendra Rajapaksa.

"We express our disgust and condemnation regarding the attacks carried out by the government that is at the threshold of an election defeat," the JVP said.

The JVP said pasting posters of Sashendra Rajapaksa indicates that the attacks have been carried out by the government and the attacks by the government escalate day by day.

Most of these attacks have taken place in Moneragala District, the party says.

Election monitor Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) in a media announcement had confirmed that election offices of opposition parties in Moneragala District have been attacked by thugs.

"The well planned attacks carried out by the government, which is at the threshold of defeat, to sabotage the programme of the JVP that makes the people aware of the anti-social and undemocratic administration of the government should be condemned with disgust," the communiqué said.

The party called upon the people,e specially the masses in the Uva province, "not to be intimidated by the sordid acts of the government but to come forward to defeat the violent, illegal politics of the cowardly government."
