* Inmate in Sri Lanka prison commits suicide

Aug 23, Polonnaruwa: An inmate of the Polonnaruwa Prison in Sri Lanka's North Central Province has hanged himself in the early hours of Saturday, the police said.

A prison guard has found the inmate hanging inside a bathroom at around 4.00 a.m. and immediately alerted the Polonnaruwa Police station.

The inmate was pronounced dead upon admission to the Polonnaruwa General hospital, the police said.

According to the police, the remand prisoner was awaiting a court trial against him for murdering a woman in Hingurakgoda.

The autopsy of the deceased will be conducted today, the police said.
