* Sri Lankan government purchases potato harvest from Uva Province farmers
Fri, Aug 22, 2014, 08:00 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Cooperatives and Internal Trade has decided to purchase the local potato harvest at Rs. 80 per kilo.

The Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando said that the purchasing of the potato harvest would be carried out through state-owned Lanka Sathosa retail network.

The purchasing was started yesterday at Badulla and Welimada Agricultural Services Centers in the potato cultivation areas. The numbers of purchasing points will be increased soon, the Ministry said.

The government increased import taxes for potato from August 12 as the harvesting season approached to benefit the local farmer.

Accordingly, the import tax for potato has been increased to Rs. 15 per kilo. The previous import tax for potato was Rs. 5 per kilo.

The tax increase is expected to control imports and increase the prices of local produce which is being harvested.
