Premadasa and Ratnapura district UNP MP Thalatha Atukorale rejected the membership in the Leadership Council when the Council was formed in last November. The party replaced Atukorale's position in the Council with MP Wijedasa Rajapakshe while Premadasa's position still remains open.

Sources close to the party said that the UNP Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe will make a proposal to the party' Working Committee to appoint Premadasa as deputy leader in a bid to unite the party as a formidable force against the Rajapaksa government before the Uva Provincial Council elections.

Jayasuriya told the 'Sri Lanka Mirror' that the party is taking measures to recollect the people who left the party, expelled from the party, are staying away from the party and facing disciplinary inquiries.

He said the progress of the party nationally is more important than the personal objectives and he is therefore willing to make any sacrifice to unite the party.
