Fri, Aug 15, 2014, 11:19 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 15, Kandy: Narcotics Bureau of Sri Lanka police have seized 59 kilos of heroin yesterday in Katugasthota, near the central hill capital of Kandy.

Police also arrested four suspects including a woman and two vehicles in the raid, Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told media.

The latest haul of heroin brings the amount of drugs sized so far this year to over 200 kilos raising the alarm that the country is becoming a narcotics hub in the international drug trade.

This is the fourth biggest seizure in recent times. Last month the Narcotics Division of Sri Lanka's Customs Department seized a heroin haul of over 100 kilograms in its Orugodwatta container yard. In a separate incident, the police recovered nine kilograms of heroin worth Rs. 63 million.

In June the Special Task Force (STF) seized 85 kilograms of heroin during a special operation and arrested two suspects.

According to the Police Spokesman, up to last month 136 kilograms of illegal drugs have been seized and 315 people were arrested.

The police believe two Sri Lankan drug kingpins, called, Gampola Vidanalage Samantha Kumara a.k.a. Wele Suda and Mohammed Siddeek living abroad are behind the international drug trafficking operations.

The Police had released the photographs of the two drug dealers who were reportedly hiding in Dubai or Pakistan and handling drug mafia in Sri Lanka. Also Interpol Red Notices have been issued for their arrest.
