* Sri Lankan President to declare open Commonwealth Youth Council Secretariat today

Aug 12, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa will declare open the Commonwealth Youth Council (CYC) Secretariat at Hambantota District Secretariat office complex this evening.

The opening is scheduled for today to coincide with the International Youth Day which falls on August 12.

According to the Chairman of National Youth Service Council (NYSC) Lalith Piyum Perera, the CYC Secretariat is established to coordinate the youth development projects, promote Commonwealth values and to conduct international youth training programs.

President Rajapaksa who is the current chair of the Commonwealth has agreed to establish the Youth Secretariat in Sri Lanka. The decision was taken at the 9th Commonwealth Youth Council Meeting held in Hambantota last November in parallel to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Accordingly, the Secretariat will be established in the Hambantota administration complex.
