* Missing Persons Commission of Sri Lanka hears 314 complaints at public sittings in Mannar district

Aug 12, Colombo: The Presidential Commission Investigating Cases of Missing Persons in Sri Lanka concluded its public sittings to hear cases of missing persons in Mannar District on Monday (August 11) evening.

The Commission commenced its sixth round of public sittings in Mannar from August 8 - 11 covering a total of 47 Grama Niladhari Divisions.

It held sittings in Manthai West Divisional Secretariat on August 8th and 9th, Mannar Divisional Secretariat on August 10th and Madhu Divisional Secretariat on Monday August 11th..

During the four days of hearing, the Commission recorded a total of 314 complaints. The Commission has invited a total of 225 complainants, out of which only 157 have been interviewed. The Commission has received another 157 new complaints of missing persons during the sittings.

The Commission had previously conducted public sittings in January, February, March, June and July of this year in Kilinochchi, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Mullaitivu and again in Batticaloa respectively.

To date, the Commission has received 19,284 complaints, inclusive of approximately 5,000 from relatives of missing security forces personnel. The Commission has thus far inquired into 786 complaints, which are being analyzed for further investigations through an independent investigation team.
