* Sri Lanka increases import taxes of two major food items

Aug 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Ministry of Finance announced the increase of taxes for potato and big onion which are two major food commodities of the Sri Lankans.

Accordingly, the import tax for potato will be increased to Rs. 15 per kilo and the import tax for big onion will be increased to Rs. 25 per kilo.

The previous import taxes for potato and onion were Rs. five and ten per kilo respectively.

The tax increase for potato will be effective from August 12 and the tax increase for big onion will be effective from August 15.

The tax increase is expected to control imports and increase the prices of local produce which is being harvested.
