Aug 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center today has sought the assistance of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) to douse a rapidly spreading fire in Knuckles Forest Range in the central hills.
The Air Force has deployed a MI-17 helicopter equipped with a 2600 liter-Bambi bucket from SLAF Base in Ratmalana to fight multiple fires in and around Hunnasgiriya area, the SLAF said.
The Disaster Management Center said the fire occurred in the Nawanagala area in Ududumbara yesterday has destroyed some 200 acres of land in the forest in the Knuckles forest reserve.
The dry drought conditions have aided the fires to spread and the DMC believes the fires were originated due to human activity.
Authorities have arrested 9 people believed to be responsible for the fires in the forest the Deputy Media Director of the Disaster Management Centre Sarath Lal Kumara told local media.
