* Welayutham takes oath as new MP for Badulla district in Sri Lanka parliament

Aug 08, Colombo: The secretary of The Lanka Jathika Estate Workers Union (LJEWU) K. Welayutham was sworn in today as a new Member of Sri Lanka Parliament form the main opposition United National Party (UNP).

He succeeded the MP for Badulla district Harin Fernando who resigned to contest the Uva Provincial Council election as the Chief Minister candidate.

Welayutham was sworn in before the Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakkody.

Welayutham contesting under the UNP ticket at the 2010 general election gained 25,056 preferential votes and placed third in the list. Only two MPs Harin Fernando and Lakshman Seneviratne were elected from the district.
