Aug 07, Colombo: Former United National Party (UNP) member of Sri Lanka's Western Provincial Council Shiral Lakthilaka said that it was a wise decision from the part of the party leadership if they discuss with the sacked party members to take them back to the UNP.
Speaking to local radio station Neth FM, Lakthilaka said that he has been considering himself as a UNP member.
"UNP leadership has suspended our membership in a very unfair manner. But I still serve the UNP and worked for the party in Hambantota although my membership had been banned."
Lakthilaka accused the UNP General Secretary for issuing a circular banning the pro-reformist members from the party and now seeking the support of them.
UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said yesterday that former Provincial Councilors Shiral Lakthilaka and Maithri Gunarathna who were expelled from the party could re-apply for the membership of the party.
Former Provincial Councilor of the Southern Province Maithri Gunarathna also expressed similar views to the private radio station.
He said the party needed to fulfill certain reforms for him to re-apply for the membership.
He further said that UNP Uva Provincial Council Chief Minister Candidate Harin Fernando has also asked for him to support the campaign.
