Tue, Aug 5, 2014, 09:57 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 05, Puttalam: A Sri Lankan female teacher harassed and humiliated by a ruling party politician has lodged a complaint in police today that she has received letters threatening to kill her.

The victimized teacher Susila Herath said that she had received a letter stating that she would be raped and her dead body would be hanged in a hall of Nawagaththegama school.

The female teacher of Nawagaththegama Navodya School, was forced by a ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) politician former North western Provincial Councilor Ananda Sarath Kumara to kneel down in her school for taking disciplinary action against the politician's daughter for violating the school's dress code.

The teacher backed by the Ceylon Teachers' Union fought for her rights in court and the court convicted the politician for charges against him and sentenced him to two years rigorous imprisonment, suspended for seven years and ordered to pay Rs. 300,000 to the teacher as damages on top of a Rs. 50,000 fine.

The ruling party expelled the accused and ordered him to resign from his Council post.

Last week the body of a main witness in the case whose evidence was vital in prosecuting the accused was found in a well in close proximity to the school and the witnesses' house.

The Judicial Medical Officer of Puttalam has not yet delivered the verdict of the inquest into his death.
