* Sri Lanka opposition MP to resign from parliament today to contest Uva PC election

Aug 05, Colombo: Sri Lanka main opposition United National Party (UNP) Badulla district parliamentarian Harin Fernando is expected to resign from parliament today in order to contest for the Uva Provincial Council election.

The secretary of National Estate Workers' Congress K. Velayuthan is to take oaths as MP to replace MP Harin Fernando.

Fernando is slated to contest the Uva Provincial Council election as the party's Chief Minister candidate. He is expected to deliver a special statement in the House regarding his resignation.

Harin Fernando gained 49,073 preferential votes at the 2010 general election from Badulla district and the party secured two seats with current Cabinet Minister of Sugar Industries Lakshman polling 31,560 preferential votes.

Velayuthan contesting under the UNP ticket gained 25,056 preferential votes and placed third in the list. Only two MPs were elected from the district. Seneviratne later joined the ruling alliance.

UNP leadership council has given approval for MP Fernando's decision to quit parliament to contest for the Uva Provincial Council election.
