* Junior Sri Lankan cricket team sent back from Chennai for security reasons
Mon, Aug 4, 2014, 12:04 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 04, Chennai: A junior under -15 Sri Lankan cricket team has been sent back from Chennai due to security reasons, Press Trust of India reported.

The 16-member under-15 team has arrived in Chennai from Colombo Sunday night to participate in a cricket tournament.

The team has been given accommodation in the city Sunday night but was denied participation in the tournament this morning due to security reasons, senior police officials have said. The team has left Chennai later heading home.

The Under-15 private tournament is scheduled to be held from August 4-7.

The junior team's arrival in Chennai comes in the wake of the posting of a derogatory article against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa with a graphic illustration of Jayalalithaa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sri Lanka's official Ministry of Defense website.

The op-ed piece has triggered a furor in India within hours after its publication prompting Sri Lanka to remove the offensive article and issue an unqualified apology to the two leaders.

In 2012, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister took disciplinary action against an official for allowing a Sri Lankan school team to play a soccer match with a Tamil Nadu team at a stadium in Chennai.
