* Thundershowers, high winds in sea areas of Sri Lanka, Meteorology Department warns

Aug 02, Colombo: The Meteorology Department said today showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle and at several places in the other sea area around the island.

Southwesterly winds will be at 20-40 kmph and can strengthen up to 50 kmph at times, the Department warned.

The deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota will be rough at times as winds can strengthen up to 60 kmph at times. Other sea areas around the island may be fairly rough at times.

According to the Met Department heavy rain falls exceeding 100mm is expected in some parts of the country while showers or thundershowers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara districts and also spread to the North Western Province.

Issuing a severe weather advisory valid for next 24 hours, the Department said strong winds at times up to 60 kmph can be expected over the central hills and over the southern and southwestern sea areas.

People were advised to take adequate precautions to minimize the damages caused by lightning activities.
