* UNP Southern Provincial Councilor passed away

Aug 01, Matara: Southern Provincial Councilor of Sri Lanka's major opposition United National Party (UNP) Kapila Weppappili passed away this morning.

He was receiving treatment at the Kalubowila Hospital for liver failure at the time of his death.

The 58-year-old veteran politician has represented Matara district in the Southern Provincial Council continuously since his electoral debut in 1994.

Wellappili entered politics in 1980 as an active member of the Youth Front of the UNP. He was the Hakmana electoral organizer of the UNP.

Having received his primary education at Narandeniya Vidyalaya, Kamburupitiya he was later educated at St Thomas Boys' School Matara and Richmond College, Galle.
