Thu, May 29, 2014, 09:55 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 29, Colombo: Dr. Nihal Jayatilleke assumed duty as the Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development this afternoon.

Dr. Jayatilleke replaced Dr. P.B. Jayasundara who was removed from the post amidst allegations from Minister Wimal Weerawansa who branded him as an economic hit man.

However, Dr. Jayasundara remains as the Secretary of the Treasury and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and Planning.

Minister Weerawansa said that his opponent had been removed only from a lesser known responsibility. However, the Ministry of Economic Development that comes under President's brother Basil Rajapaksa is one of the most crucial ministries of the country.

Dr. Jayatilleke was the former Secretary to the Ministry of Health. He was criticized for being unable to control the wave of strikes that sprang up in the Ministry of Health in the past few weeks.

Present Secretary of the Ministry of Plantation Mrs. Sudharma Karunaratne has been appointed as the Secretary to the Ministry of Health.
