* Sri Lankan President arrives in New Delhi to attend swearing-in ceremony of Indian PM

May 26, New Delhi: Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has arrived in New Delhi this morning to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the President's official Twitter feed said.

Mr. Modi will be sworn-in as India's15th Prime Minister at 6 pm today, local time, in the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhawan in New Delhi.

The ceremony will be attended by top leaders from all the SAARC countries including Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and President Rajapaksa. Nearly 3,000 guests are expected at the event.

Mr. Modi's invitation to President Rajapaksa to attend the ceremony has created uproar in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu where the leaders of Tamil political parties have vowed to boycott the event.

President's delegation to the ceremony comprises External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, Livestock and Rural Community Development Minister Arumugam Thondaman, Jaffna Mayor Mrs. Yogeshwari Pathkunarajah, Monitoring Member of Parliament Sajin de Vass Gunawardena, Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga and External Affairs Ministry Secretary Mrs. Kshenuka Seneviratne.

Following the ceremony the President is expected to hold bilateral discussions with the new Prime Minister.
