* Coalition party denies it's behind the rumored replacement of Sri Lanka's Treasury Secretary
Sun, May 25, 2014, 11:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 25, Colombo: A coalition party of the Sri Lankan government denied that it has anything to do with the much speculated replacement of the powerful Finance Secretary Dr. P B Jayasundera from the additional post of Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development.

Local media is abuzz with the news that the Secretary to the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nihal Jayathilaka will replace Dr. Jayasundara from his lesser-known post as the Secretary to the Ministry of Economic Development.

The replacement, local media say, is due to the Dr. Jayasundera 's fallout with the leader of the coalition party National Freedom Front, Minister of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa, who has branded him as an "economic hit man".

However, Dr. Jayasundera 's secretary posts of the Treasury and the Ministry of Finance will be untouched, the reports say.

Minister Weerawansa today lashed at the reports saying that his party's 12 proposals, approved at its National Convention and presented to the President recently, had not asked for the removal of the Treasury Secretary from his additional post.

The Minister who was untiringly campaigning against Dr. Jayasundera told media that removing him from a lesser known position was pointless.

However, a senior government official told ColomboPage that Dr. Jayasundera is expected to be replaced to ease his workload in three significant positions and it is not due to any political pressure.

Media also reported that Ms. Sudharma Karunaratne, who is the current Secretary to the Ministry of Plantation, will be transferred to the post of Secretary of the Ministry of Health.
