May 23, Colombo: Suresh Premachandran, a parliamentarian of Sri Lanka's main Tamil party, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has said that thousands of families in the North and East had lost their breadwinners during the war.

Distributing livelihood assistance to 10 war widows in Kilinochchi recently, the MP noted that 84,000 families in the North and East have become destitute without breadwinners.

The TNA MP has said that these families should be provided with extensive livelihood assistance ensuring their social safety to rebuild their lives steadily.

He has added that the TNA has continuously requested the government to provide adequate livelihood assistance to the war victims in the North and East, but the government is more concerned about building houses for army personnel and is focused on their welfare.
