* Suspect arrested over the killing of ruling party local councilor

May 23, Colombo: A suspect in the killing of a ruling party member of the Peliyagoda Urban Council has been arrested, the police said today.

The arrested person is believed to be one of the two suspects, who opened fire at the UPFA Peliyagoda Urban Council member, 23-year-old Chamila Sandaruwan near the Tyre Corporation Junction in Dalugama on May12.

The suspect was arrested from Katunayake and the investigations have led to the discovery of a motorbike, full-face helmet, two mobile phones and camouflaged attire similar to military fatigues, the police said.

Two armed men on a motorcycle have opened fire at the councilor while he was driving from the Kadawatha Magistrate Court after appearing in the court for a case against him.

The suspect is being detained for interrogations and the police are reportedly looking for three more suspects.
