May 22, Colombo: A convicted Maldivian drug kingpin has been arrested in Sri Lanka on Wednesday and is awaiting extradition to the Maldives, Haveeru on line reported.

Ibrahim 'Shafaa' Shafaz, who was serving an 18-year prison sentence, had gone missing after he was granted a three month period to receive medical treatment in Sri Lanka.

Shafaz was arrested at around 4 pm Wednesday in a joint operation conducted by Maldives and Sri Lankan police.

The operation was sanctioned by Maldivian Home Minister Umar Naseer, a Home Ministry spokesperson has told the Maldivian media.

The spokesman said Shafaz will be extradited to Maldives at the earliest.

According to the Maldivian police, Shafaz's cartel had been distributing drugs on a large scale in the Maldives since 2005.
