May 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka will hold a grand celebration to mark the fifth anniversary of the war victory in the southern town of Matara on Sunday, May 18th under the patronage of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

The military parades presented by the troops of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the Civil Defence Force along with the war veterans who were injured in the battle, will march the streets of Matara on Saturday morning to mark the fifth anniversary of the defeat of terrorist organization Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam (LTTE) and elimination of three-decade long terror.

The Sri Lanka Air Force has organized a fly past with their aircraft and helicopters while the Navy will mark their sail past at the bordering southern blue water with the presence of naval ships, gun boats, fast attack crafts, wave rider boats and arrow boats, the military said.

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and Urban Development Gotabhaya Rajapaksa inspected the final rehearsal today.

The event will be attended by the government ministers, MPs, as well as other senior officials and foreign diplomats.

However, the Canadian envoy in Colombo has said that Canada will boycott the event.
