* Sri Lanka police arrest four suspects wanted for cop killing

May 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka police on Friday have arrested four persons including two army deserters, suspected of abducting two police officers and killing one of them in Kurunegala earlier this month.

Four armed individuals in a van have abducted the two officers, who were on traffic duty on the Kurunegala -Dambulla Road, and driven them to the nearby Badagamuwa Forest Reservation where the policemen were stripped off of their uniforms and shot.

One of the officers identified as Chandana Sampath, 43, was killed and the other officer Ajith Weerasooriya has managed to escape his abductors with injuries.

Sunday Times reported that according to the CID, the motive for the killing is an alleged affair between one of the police officers and the wife of an airman who was part of the gang involved in the murder.

However, the policemen alleged of having the illicit affair had escaped while the other officer, a father of two was killed.

The police had also identified a house in Thimbirigaskatuwa, Negombo as the palce where the policemen's uniforms were burnt.

Two of the suspects have recently been released from the prison and they been involved in several thefts after their release, local media reports said.

The police released a sketch of one of the suspects and the CCTV footage of the van the suspects used to the public and offered a Rs. one million reward for anyone providing accurate information.
