May 11, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police today released to media a sketch of a suspect in the abduction of two police officers and the murder of one of them in Kurunegala last week.

Four armed individuals in a van had abducted the two officers on traffic duty in the early hours of May 06 when the officers stopped the vehicle on the Kurunegala -Dambulla Road for a routine check.

The suspects abducted the unarmed policemen, taken to a secluded area and shot one of them, 43-year-old Chandana Sampath, while the other officer, Ajith Weerasooriya fought with the assailants and escaped with injuries.

The police had made a sketch of one of the abductors, on the description provided by the injured officer, who is receiving treatment at the Kurunegala Hospital for his injuries.

According to the police the suspect in the sketch is believed to be between ages 30-32, around 5 feet and 4 inches tall, dark-skinned and with an elongated face.

The police also released a photo believed to be one of the suspects.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana releasing the images to the media said the suspect in the photo had rented the van in Gokarella a day before using a false drivers' license. Although the information on the license was false, they believe the photo is that of the suspect, he said.

The police also released the video footage, taken from CCTV cameras, believed to be of the suspects robbing a fuel station in Weweldeniya before the abduction of the police officers.

Police Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana urged the public to come forward with any information to help police to capture the suspects. The police had offered a reward of one million rupees to anyone who is able to provide accurate information.

The public is requested to report any information regarding any of the two suspects or the van to the CID hot line at 077- 2659336.
