May 08, Colombo: A junior minister in the Sri Lankan government has said that the government could not ban alcohol consumption in the country.

Deputy Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs Minister M.K.D.S. Gunawardena has said in parliament that the government could not ban alcohol consumption.

He observed that the government could only control the consumption of alcohol in the country through the government's 'mathata thitha' policy.

Gunawardena has made this comment in response to a question posed by United National Party (UNP) MP Ajith P. Perera.

Perera had asked whether liquor consumption would be banned in Sri Lanka since it was against the Buddhist teaching.

The deputy minister has responded by saying that liquor consumption cannot be banned, but can only be controlled.
