* MPs of Sri Lanka main opposition protest in Hambantota

May 03, Hambantota: Parliamentarians and provincial council members of Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) today staged a protest in Hambantota against the attack on a group of UNP MPs when they visited Mattala airport and Hambantota port last month.

The UNP members staging a protest outside the Hambantota police station demanded the police to arrest the individuals who attacked and manhandled five UNP legislators who were on an inspection tour of the mega infrastructure facilities.

Gampaha District UNP parliamentarian and the chairman of the party's Leadership Council said the police must investigate and arrest the individuals instigated the scuffle at both facilities.

UNP MPs Ajith P. Perera, Nalin Bandara, Eran Wickramaratne, Ajith Mannapperuma and R. Yogarajan came under attack during the inspection tour last month and they were threatened by thugs who claimed to be defenders of the ventures.

Photographs published in the local media showed Eraj Fernando, Mayor of Hambantota running towards the UNP MPs carrying what seemed like a pistol during the attack.

UNP MP and leadership council chairman Karu Jayasuriya said that the police must investigate the incident and arrest those responsible.

Speaking at the protest, Hambantota district UNP MP Sajith Premadasa said the government and the President must ensure democracy is protected in the country and take action against those who attacked the UNP MPs.
