* Earth slip closes main Ella-Wellawaya Road in central Sri Lanka
Fri, May 2, 2014, 07:36 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 02, Badulla: The main Ella-Wellawaya Road in central Sri Lanka was blocked for vehicular traffic due to an earth slip, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said.

The earth slip caused by rains in the area occurred at the 12th Mile Post Junction on the road in Karandagolla earlier today, a DMC spokesperson said.

Motorists have been advised to seek alternate routes.

However, part of the road has now been cleared and one lane is now open for traffic, the DMC spokesperson said. Measures are being taken to clear the entire block as soon as possible, he added.

The DMC warned of more landslides in Kandy and Badulla districts due to the prevailing monsoonal weather and asked the public to be vigilant.
