* Japanese envoy recognizes Sri Lanka's Tokyo Cement
Fri, May 2, 2014, 06:55 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 02, Colombo: The Ambassador of Japan in Colombo, Nobuhito Hobo, has commended Tokyo Cement Company (Lanka) PLC for its services in contributing to the deepening of mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and Sri Lanka.

"The commendation from the Japanese Ambassador recognizes the company's notable contributions in enhancing Sri Lanka's economic development through joint business partnership between Japan and Sri Lanka. Tokyo Cement's business performance, its unique environment of measures and CSR activities present good practices in solving the structural issues in Sri Lanka," the Embassy said in a statement.

Tokyo Cement contributes to the economic development and employment levels in Sri Lanka, especially in the Eastern Province.

By using a biomass power plant and only renewable biomass energy sources as fuel for the production process, Tokyo Cement has promoted sustainable development and green power in Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the company is a pioneer in the area of corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Its activities are wide-ranging and include projects such as the AYS Gnanam Construction Training Academy, school nutrition programmes, post tsunami relief, empowering farming communities, mangrove reforestation and coral rehabilitation. Some of the projects are conducted jointly with the Sri Lankan government and NGOs.

Tokyo Cement was established in 1982 when the late Deshamanya A.Y.S. Gnanam, former Country Manager of Mitsui Company Limited, Mr Asano and Mr Komath Subara, President of Mitsui Mining Company, recognized the potential of Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, as a cement manufacturing hub.

The company kept operating even in times of conflict to become the leading company in the Sri Lankan cement industry.
