* Democratic Party candidate for upcoming provincial elections in Sri Lanka found assaulted

Mar 24, Colombo: Candidate of Sri Lanka's Democratic Party at the forthcoming Western Provincial Council (WPC) has been assaulted by unidentified assailants.

The police told the media today that Kalutara District candidate of the Democratic Party, K.A. Nishantha was found assaulted with his hand tied together inside his vehicle.

Nishantha, according to the police, was attacked by an unidentified group in Dikpitiya, Mathugama this morning.

The police media unit said that the candidate was found unconscious inside his vehicle and that he was admitted to the Nagoda Hospital for treatment.

Two election related incidents of violence were reported last week where one attack resulted in the death of a United National Party (UNP) supporter in the Gampaha District.

Elections for the Western and Southern Provincial Councils will be held this Saturday (29).
