* Operations at Sri Lanka's National Water Board affected by striking engineers
Sun, Mar 23, 2014, 07:50 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 23, Colombo: Work at the National Water Supplies and Drainage Board (NWSDB) in Sri Lanka has been affected by the trade union action resorted to by the engineers.

General Secretary of the NWSDB Engineers Union, J.A.C. Piyal told the media that the trade union action was due to the objections to appointing engineer assistants to top posts bypassing engineers who were more qualified for such promotions.

He explained that 298 engineer assistants have been promoted this year to posts that should have been awarded to engineers.

The trade union action at the NWDB according to Piyal will continue until the authorities give them a written assurance that their grievances would be addressed.

The engineers have also held a protest last week outside the NWSDB head office in Ratmalana.

NWSDB officials have however said that the issue with the engineers have been more or less resolved, but a court ruling on some promotions has made it difficult to address the engineers' demand.
