Mar 22, Colombo: Sri Lanka police will deploy around 15,000 police personnel to provide security for the elections for the Western and Southern Provincial Councils that will be held on March 29th.

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya has said that at least 8,500 police personnel will be deployed for security at polling stations, while another 2,500 would be deployed as mobile patrols.

Another 3,000-5,000 police personnel will be deployed for security at counting centers, he said.

The Election Commissioner has requested the Police to keep an anti-riot squad of 1,500 and the Special Task Force personnel ready for any emergency situation, the Government Information Department said.

Deshapriya has said that all arrangements are in place to conduct a free and fair poll in the two provinces.
