* Sri Lanka's Elections Commissioner has fewer powers than Indian Elections Commissioner
Wed, Mar 19, 2014, 01:06 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 19, Colombo: Elections Commissioner of Sri Lanka Mahinda Deshapriya says that he has only a fewer powers when compared with the Indian Elections Commissioner.

Addressing the media, Deshapriya said that he did not have sufficient power to initiate legal action against elections law violators or the power to take legal action against any candidate who violates election laws even after the conclusion of elections.

According to Deshapriya, the Elections Department had an extensive archive of photographic and video footage evidence that would help initiate legal action against errant politicians.

Deshapriya explained that special raiding teams from the Elections Department have been deployed to all districts in the Western and Southern Provinces to look into election law violations.

The information gathered in this manner could be used when filing cases, he added.
